Clattering out of the yard on Wolfie and Buzz, Hannah and Gaby were in high spirits. Hannah felt giddy with exhilaration over what she had just done, and it was so good to ride with her best friend again. The girls headed on to the lane that led out towards the moors. Hannah had timed her post with Millie being tied up with Horsetalk, so she knew she wouldn’t be able to check her phone for at least an hour. They needed time for the post to gather momentum, and Millie was sure to want to shut it down.

For a while they wound their way up through the gorse, climbing higher and higher, feeling the cool breeze on their warm skin. Hannah kept getting her phone out to check. People only followed her because of Millie. There were a number of likes and a few comments about how good it was to rescue a pony, but nothing that would help.

“See?” Gaby said as Hannah read one aloud. “It’s not a bad thing. Everyone will think your yard is really kind.”

There was no text or missed call from Millie, so Hannah knew she hadn’t yet seen it. She felt a bit shaky; the initial adrenaline rush had gone.

Hannah and Gaby dismounted at the top of the hill and let Wolfie and Buzz graze as they shared some water and sweets. The shrill ring of Hannah’s phone was like Millie’s angry voice.

Hannah stared at her sister’s name on the screen. “What should I do?”

“Ignore it,” Gaby said airily. “Talk to her when you get back.”

The missed call was swiftly followed by a text. Hannah imagined Millie jabbing at her phone.

“I told you not to post anything!” Hannah read the message aloud. “She still looks awful. It’s giving a really bad impression.”

She looks awful because she was in an awful state! Hannah wrote back. Why is it a problem?

Heart beating hard, Hannah turned her phone off. At least they could enjoy the rest of the ride in peace.
